Australian Geomechanics Society (AGS) Symposium 2024

Our team recently attended the AGS Symposium in our 7th year as Platinum Sponsors, exploring the evolving landscape of piling and ground improvement applications.

Projects now face tighter space constraints, stricter vibration and noise controls, and the need for innovative monitoring systems in dense urban areas, making industry collaboration and technological advancements critical.

Hamed Shahbazian, Instrumentation—Team Leader, Justin Doery—Engineering Geologist, and Michael Di Meglio—Operations Manager, were in attendance. Hamed Shahbazian also delivered a well-received presentation on Geotechnical and Environmental Investigation and Testing Services.

Key takeaways from the event included:

  • Piling refusal should be defined with specific values, as rig size significantly impacts outcomes, ensuring clarity and consistency in industry practices.
  • Insights into how COVID-19 presented unique construction challenges where the team implemented creative solutions. An example was the Echuca-Moama Bridge Project – the largest infrastructure project in northern Victoria – where temporary fencing had to be placed in the middle of the bridge to segregate the VIC/NSW workforces. Engineers from Canberra had to come down to conduct inspections on the NSW side of the river because engineers from Victoria couldn’t cross the border.

The symposium was a great reminder of the power of geo-professionals working together to tackle real-world challenges. The team enjoyed reconnecting with industry peers through in-depth discussions at our event booth.

Thank you to AGS Victoria for organising such an informative and engaging event.
